Why Financial Skills Matter for Young Entrepreneurs: The Knowledge That Can Unlock Business Growth

Access to finance is cited as one of the biggest barriers facing young entrepreneurs today. However, the deeper issue often isn’t access; it’s the skills and knowledge needed to know what financial support their business really needs.

Why financial skills matter

Many founders aren’t given access to or the opportunity to learn how financing works – such as what type of capital fits their business, how much they really need, or what they’re giving away in exchange for it. Business financial training should be seen not simply as an administrative necessity, but as an important part of entrepreneurship itself. Without that knowledge, even talented, ambitious young entrepreneurs can end up taking on the wrong funding at the wrong time, and it can cost them their business.

That’s the gap that FINESSE: Financial Skills for Scaling Entrepreneurs in Europe was built to close. Developed by Youth Business International (YBI) in partnership with proud sponsor Visa, the initiative is equipping young entrepreneurs across Poland, France and the UK with the financial knowledge and skills they need to grow with confidence through training and the FINESSE Playbook, a free, downloadable resource. Six months into the programme, we’re sharing a reminder of why financial literacy matters so much for this generation of founders, what FINESSE offers, and the impact it’s already having.

Financial skills are business growth skills

Turning a great business idea into a sustainable, scaling business takes the financial literacy to understand cash flow, evaluate financing options, and make informed capital decisions.

For many young entrepreneurs, this is exactly where the knowledge gap lies. As a result, they often:

  • Struggle to understand which financing options are actually right for their business
  • Underestimate or misjudge their cash flow needs until it’s too late
  • Take the first funding offer available, rather than the best-fit one
  • Give away more equity, or take on more debt, than their business can comfortably sustain

Entrepreneurs do not need to become accountants to solve these problems. But they do need enough financial understanding to interpret what is happening in their business and make decisions with confidence.

Why financial training matters for young entrepreneurs

Limited financial knowledge can become a genuine barrier to growth. That is why FINESSE is designed to help entrepreneurs understand their current financial position, anticipate future financing needs, navigate different sources of capital and develop a practical plan for accessing finance.

That shift from knowledge to action is important. Financial literacy is most valuable when young entrepreneurs can use it to make better business decisions that result in stability.

A free financial skills resource for entrepreneurs

One of the central ideas behind FINESSE is that entrepreneurs should not wait until they urgently need money before thinking about finance. The FINESSE Playbook describes the risks of reactive fundraising, like giving away equity without fully considering the implications or delaying a funding decision because the process feels overwhelming. Instead, it encourages entrepreneurs to develop a financing strategy to support their business’s needs for the next 18-24 months.

Rather than beginning with “How much money can I raise?”, founders are encouraged to identify the milestones that will genuinely change their business. That could mean reaching a revenue target, increasing production capacity, expanding into a new market or becoming cash-flow positive. Once those milestones are clear, the entrepreneur can begin working backwards: What resources will be required? What will they cost? When will the money be needed? And what kind of finance is best suited to each requirement?

This is the approach the Playbook describes as thinking like a “capital architect”: designing finance around the needs and direction of the business instead of simply chasing available funding.

The FINESSE Playbook is aimed at entrepreneurs aged 18–35 with early- and growth-stage businesses and is available in English, Polish and French. It condenses YBI’s wider Financing Strategy curriculum into an accessible, action-oriented guide.

It helps entrepreneurs:

  • define a clear growth vision and identify important business milestones;
  • understand the differences between grants, debt and equity;
  • assess what type of capital best fits their business;
  • calculate short-term cash flow and longer-term funding gaps;
  • consider how much capital they really need; and
  • build a simple capital stack that combines funding sources for different purposes.

The exercises are deliberately practical, with checklists, prompts and worksheets entrepreneurs can complete as they go, so they come away with the start of their own financing plan, not just new information. It aims to make business finance less intimidating and more closely connected to the decisions entrepreneurs are already making every day.

The impact so far

The Playbook has reached over 200 young entrepreneurs since launch, and early feedback has been strong:

  • 90% of people have reported an increase in confidence in their ability to develop a financing strategy
  • The Playbook has achieved 4.9/5 stars for its quality as a practical resource

Since its launch, the FINESSE Playbook is reaching entrepreneurs who want to strengthen their understanding of business finance and make more informed decisions about growth.

Building stronger businesses and more resilient economies across Europe

Founders who understand financing strategy raise capital more deliberately, protect their ownership and flexibility, and grow businesses that are genuinely built to last. Over time, stronger businesses can create jobs, reach new markets and contribute to local and national economies.

This is central to the thinking behind FINESSE. Access to finance remains important, but knowing how much capital to raise, when to raise it and what kind of finance best supports the business can be just as significant.

The FINESSE Playbook is free to access and is available in English, French and Polish.
