Uganda

Ecomak Recyclers, founded by 29-year-old entrepreneur Ronald Mugaiga, is transforming Uganda’s housing landscape while tackling a global challenge: plastic pollution. This forward-thinking social enterprise recycles plastic waste into low-carbon construction materials, including bricks, blocks, and roofing tiles. These products are not only sustainable but also more affordable and efficient to build with compared to traditional cement, providing a practical solution to Africa’s growing housing demand.

“Witnessing the escalating plastic pollution crisis, I founded Ecomak Recyclers with a vision to combat this global challenge through innovative recycling solutions,” Ronald shares.

His mission is twofold: to address the environmental impact of plastic waste and to uplift marginalized communities. Ecomak’s recycling efforts have significantly reduced plastic waste in local landfills, preserving the environment and improving the quality of life for surrounding communities.

The initiative has also created employment opportunities through recycling centers, empowering individuals and fostering economic growth. This combination of environmental sustainability and community development lies at the heart of Ronald’s work.

With eyes firmly set on the future, Ronald’s next goal is to scale operations and expand Ecomak’s community outreach programs. “Our priority for the next year is to establish additional recycling centers, creating more jobs and furthering our environmental impact. Through continued innovation and community engagement, we aspire to lead the way in fostering a circular economy that benefits both people and the planet,” he explains.

Ronald credits YBI member Enterprise Uganda for equipping him with the tools to succeed. “Through their training, I gained the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills needed to start and run a successful social enterprise,” he says.

From tackling plastic waste to creating sustainable building solutions, Ronald’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of social entrepreneurship in driving change for a better future.

Ronald was a finalist in the Social Entrepreneurship category at the YBI Global Entrepreneur of the Year Awards 2024.
